Last time I pointed out how Genshin China isn't 100% real China and it's more likely an homage to Wuxia this Chinese fiction that's its own reality with its own world structure and rules.
Then in the last Archon Quest I pointed out how a fundamental aspect of Chinese society was the core of Genshin's story.
This time it's all Chinese all the time lol. Real early on we're told that our uncultured self should know that even thought we saw fireworks and firework culture in Inazuma with the Naganoharas these things actually come from Liyue. Real life fireworks are also Chinese but I don't think that's a shock to anybody. But also the stuff she says about fireworks is mostly legit. As far as I know even the New Year itself used the "firecrackers" because the word for year in Chinese used to mean a demon and if you didn't drive it away before the New Year it would be a bad omen. I put firecrackers in quotes because Ningguang makes it seem like they don't exist anymore. That couldn't be further from the truth. Anybody who's ever been to a Chinatown during the holiday knows all too well how extant firecrackers are. Ow my ears. [emoji]
The new Mingxiao Lantern is also more thematic with the New Year than a deer. No offense Skybracer. There's a Chinese phrase that plays off of homonyms. 年年有余 pronounced nian nian you yu. The last word yu means surplus and the whole phrase translates to always having extra every year. But the word for fish 鱼 is also pronounced yu so it lets you use them to depict the phrase.
Ningguang says balance is important to Liyue. Hmmmmm. You don't say. In context though the thing with Keqing is about budgeting your time which she's clearly bad at but I mean so is Ganyu if you played her quest. I have a feeling this is a commentary on young people in China because in their quest for financial security and clout many of them forget to have social lives at the same time. It's worst in Hong Kong and ****** but not as bad as like Japan yet.
Also when Keqing says they just need to increase the budget if the current one won't meet their needs that's also true for the New Year. This holiday is the biggest thing in Asia so you can save up all year but not for this holiday.
Ok now the event. There's the wooden cutout lantern thing where you have to move around the object and at just the right angle its shadow will look like something. I've seen across so many places that fans were looking forward to this "Chinese puzzle game" but for the life of me I couldn't find any references to it. The only thing was like a game from 2017 that has nothing to do with China. So please don't get mad at me (even my buddies didn't know about it) and if you guys do know please do tell. [emoji]
The next part doesn't really have anything to do with China but it has everything to do with us.

MiHoYo don't do this to us.

Also they really must be spending too much time with Ying'er. I mean-

Aether's the canon protag right?

Anyway I had a blast with this one. Hope you guys are enjoying the new Lantern Rite too!
