That same old deal

I would have brought this up sooner but I decided to respect the week long mourning period. But the livestream is already out and business should be back to normal so I think I should be safe to talk about this now.

Anyway we all know the livestream was delayed last week. But delayed to when? We wouldn't get an official notification until a couple days ago but I don't know if anybody really needed it by then. That's because

leaked media had us covered much sooner than that. And that's been MiHoYo's problem for years: bad marketing.

And I know what some people are going to reply without engaging their brains: "Bad at marketing? Have you seen their trailers? They make millions!" Yeah not what I'm talking about.

Think about it for a second. MiHoYo's been on a campaign against leaks right? They've sued leakers and hackers and banned players for them too. But it hasn't stopped the leaks from happening has it? Why is that? This livestream is the perfect example. Last Friday we were all expecting a livestream. Then it got delayed for very valid reasons but the problem was when did it get delayed to? We wouldn't hear anything from MiHoYo at all. But by Sunday we knew it was delayed a week. We knew because of the leakers. So these leaks are providing the information we need to know that MiHoYo takes way too long to tell us.

They could have easily told us in the same tweet that it was going to be delayed that:

1. The delay was to respect the passing of a major leader of the country and

2. It's the local custom to stop all entertainment activities for a week because of that (yes this is why it was delayed by a week)

That would have been easy to understand, easy to respect and give the players all the information they needed so they wouldn't have had to wonder when to expect things to go back to normal. Good marketing. Actually responsible marketing too.

And it would also have been fine if they decided to wait until their Monday to announce it too. I think we could have all understood if they needed the weekend to personally mourn. But they didn't so what they've done is prove that the player community needs the leaks. Good job.

Btw I talked about the problem of announcing livestreams this late a long time ago. I pointed out that a couple days before is not the best idea because it doesn't give people enough time to find the information and schedule for it. There have been many times the livestream ends up delayed to Sunday and most of those times players have to again look to the leaks we can easily Google for to tell us. A week's notice would be better. An in-game notice a week in advance would be best.
