Introduction
Hello everyone [emoji]
If you spend any time on this forum you might have seen at least one post of category "Please help me build my team". [emoji]
Those posts come from different kind of players, from beginers who struggle with his first boss to high lvls who reached last stages of spiral abyss and have no idea how to beat them.
This is why i decided to write this guide. Maybe it will help you to decide which teamcomp you are gonna use in different situations.
Here you can see my character roaster:

As you can see i miss a lot of characters, which means that i havent build them and used them on my own. But I play almost from game lunch and everything you will read below is based not only on my solo experience but also on coop, where i've seen every other character in action.
Okey lets begin with guide [emoji]
Character roles
First of all you must know what place in your party your desired character is capable of fitting in.
If you play a lot, you might say "you can go with 4 hard dps boys or 4 supports and clear almost everything".
Well - yes you are right. You also can build Barbara into full dps and even get something out of it, but any other character which is meant to be dps will do better when build correctly.
Every list below will be sorted only based on my personal opinion and every character will be given only one role, his best role in team. Example - Bennet, he can do well as healer but you will see him here only as support. Because i think thats his best role. [emoji]
I'll start with Main dps:

Characters listed here are not sorted from best to worst. Everyone here is capable of consistantly doing a lot of damage without any help from others. They are big boys by themselfs in almost any given time.
Chose whoever you like from this list and build him, and you will be happy with his dmg output.
Next we go with Elemental reactions

Everyone here is good with breaking enemy shields and improving dmg output of your main dps boy.
Or bring some burst dmg with shields (hello Albedo).
Characters you see here dont need every talent to be lvled up to max lvls or all 20lvl artifacts to be usefull. Mostly they are good for thier elemental skills. You gonna use their skills and switch back to your main dps.
Supports:

What separates all of elemental reactions characters from that category?
Everyone here can bring some sort of crowd controll or another utility to your team. Taunts, stuns, vacuums, building, or just directly buff your dps stats (hello Bennet).
You might ask - why Zhongli in supports but Albedo in elemental reactions? Yes they both can build stuff, but Zhongli have awesome stun and Albedo dont, simple as it.
Healers:

Well, main thing you want to see from those characters then you use them, is not a big dmg numbers or cc, it is just healing/shielding. And they are good at it.
Once again - thats my opinion on their best role in team. If you dont agree with me, so be it, i dont mind. [emoji]
Okey, now then we are done with roles, lets get to team building.
Ill separate team building for beginners, then you only start playing this game and the main thing you care is exploration, to high lvl spiral abyss team comps.
World Exploration
Lets start with this. [emoji]
Since this is beginners category of team comps, here i will use only 4 star characters as example, because it is most likely that you gonna have them as a beginner, then 5 star ones.
Also you might say - chose who you like and play with them. And you will be right, any team comp in open world can do well with fighting. But the question is - how ofter you will have to go to menu and change characters only to solve this exact puzzle?
The most common stuff you will see while exploring is - baloons, torches, different elemental stones and pressure plates. There are some other stuff but this is what you will find wherever you go.
Knowing this we can come to a simple conclusion.
We need archer for baloons, fire guy for torches and melting, as much different elementals as possible and MC. Why MC? Because a lot of puzzles in Li yue will require his elemental skill to be solved, and you will have to switch for him very often. [emoji]
My example of a team:

If I had to start this game all over again, i will be playing as this team during my first days of gameplay. (Or will use Razor in place of Beidou) [emoji]
That team consists of same elements as starting characters, but i find those ones are just better for exploring. [emoji]
In this team you will have good amount of damage and healing which means that you wont have any problems with fighting, you can even beat any world boss without switching.
Also you can solve almost any puzzle having those elements in your team. You even wont struggle with mining. We dont have water or anemo in this team, but you will need them pretty rarely.
Of course you can use who you like and place him in your team, if you get 5 star - go ahead and use him. But once again, thats and example of a 4 star team, which will deal with exploring and puzzles really well, without needing to constantly switch someone.
Spiral Abyss
I wont be covering team comps for domains, because if you have teams for spiral abyss, the hardest late game content in this game, any domain will be easy for you. [emoji]
Ideally in spirall abyss you want your team to consisnt of 1 of each role mentioned above. 1 Main dps, 1 elemental reaction guy to boost your dps boy, support and healer. But thats Ideally, ofc there are exeptions and i will mention it further.
During your climb in spiral abyss eventually you will see a lot of rooms of 1 elemental type in it. Only Pyro or only Cryo for example. Knowing this i will recommend to never build 2 main dps of same elemental type.
If your only 5 stars is Diluc and Klee (for example), it will be better to chose only 1 of them to build and get another dps from 4 stars of a different element.
The core of your teams in spiral abyss will be those main dps you decided to build. Every other character you add to your team should somehow situationally improve your main guy and help him to deal more damage or make it less likely for him to die. [emoji]
Different floors will make you bring different characters with your main dps to pass them in time for max stars.
Thats why i recommend only to build 2 main dps and start focusing on other type of characters. Almost in every floor you will need different elements to break through shields at least.
Need to mention that you dont have to build those supportive characters to their max potential. They will do very well at 70 or 80 lvls with 6 lvl talents.
There are some exeptions of course. [emoji]
If you decided to build Childe or Hu Tao as main dps you might find out that they have pretty long downtime on their elemental skill, during which their dps output is very low.
In that case you will need another dps to fill that downtime. You cant allow yourself to waste those precious seconds in spiral abyss, waiting for their skill recharge, this will definetly make you lose stars.
If you have both, put them in same team, they will do very well together. If only 1 of them - add any of 4 star dps to fill that downtime. [emoji]
Floors 9 and 10 is relatively easy to pass for max stars with almost any teamcomp. Just look what enemy you will be fighting and bring elements to deal with their shields.
Example of my team comp for those floors:

Your problems with abyss most likely to start from floor 11, especially chamber 2 (as of time writing that guide). From exactly this floor, support characters from list above will start to shine.
Starting from floor 11 enemies will deal a lot of damage, and it is easy to die. Thats why the more crowd control you have, the more opportunity your dps will have to deal damage and less time you will spend healing. Every second counts.
My team for floor 11:

As you can see, from exactly that floor i brough mona and succrose to action, their cc is very usefull here, especially at chamber 2 (almost all enemies will ignore you and try to break that stone, so more cc you have, easier for you it will be). [emoji]
Yes i dont have max stars here, but thats the matter of artifacts. I dont have any problem with surviving and time to deal damage. Mona and Ganyu keeps everyone frozen. While in other team, Succrose and Ning knocks up a lot and stops enemy actions. Childe charged attack also knocks up.
Now the final floor, floor 12
My teams for this floor:

As you can see, i have 2 totally different kind of team comps here.
I dont have any cc in team with my Childe, but i have 2 geo characters (1 to fill childe downtime and 1 healer) which also brings a lot of shields enemies cant pass throug, and xianling which significantly improves dps output without needing to be on the battlefield. [emoji]
Meanwhile in another team Ganyu, Mona and Barbara keeps everything almost permanently taunted or frozen. That team struggles with survivability if focused but have insane controll, using which Ganyu can obliterate anything without risk of dying.
You might ask, why you have Beidou here? Becouse sometimes AI decides to ignore taunt abilities and jump on your face (esp geovishaps), and thats exactly why Beidou is here, to hold those attack and give time for cc to get off cd. [emoji]
Yea yea, i dont have max amount of stars here, but thats only a matter of artifact grinding or getting some constellation. As you can see i dont have a lot of 5 stars and still doing pretty fine. [emoji]
Well, thats all of it.
Thank you for reading and I hope it can be helpful. [emoji]
