I started this game on launch. When this community was still young and fresh there was this huge kick on "saving primogems" because of "copium" since there was a gacha system to this game. Man that screwed up so many accounts. But one popular excuse for saving up primogems in the f2p playerbase was Kamisato Ayaka. And man were the memes wild. I mean there were memes and memes and more memes to the point where some wouldn't even make sense nowadays.
And because of this strategy of saving primogems which also means skipping banners you had a severe case of FOMO across the community. Because of that I even made my own video addressing the issue and the root cause behind it. How coincidental that this Ayaka re-run that we have also happens to feature the character that caused the FOMO that got me involved in the first place. ![]()
That's the memory I have with Ayaka. I remember the young Genshin community and all the fear of getting FOMO by not having a million primogems saved up and waiting for Ayaka. And that's what caused them all to get FOMO anyway because they skipped over other prize characters like Bennett, Xingqiu, Zhongli and Ganyu. That's why one of the arguments I made against skipping banners was this: By skipping until Ayaka you end up with almost no characters. Then yes you will end up with Ayaka and probably all the 4* characters on that banner only. But what if another player who didn't save at all and got plenty of other characters in between also ends up getting Ayaka? Then what was it all for? Funny enough when Ayaka did come in v2.0 I was that player. I had all 4* characters and I was only missing a few 5*s but I did get Ayaka. ![]()
After I made my video I noticed the player I had specifically used as an example against this strategy ended up no longer saving up primogems and in just the next update alone he managed to get Eula and Mona. He followed that up with Kazuha and by the anniversary his account looked much better. And as far as I know he hasn't mentioned FOMO again.
Not a bad memory at all though I know the skipping banners thing is still a strategy being used by players even now. With so many characters now and so much meta to play around with this strategy is even worse than it was already since launch. Hopefully the playerbase especially the popular content creators will eventually get the message out so nobody ends up with self-inflicted FOMO in the future. ![]()
