You know it's become a pretty common fact about this game and some even use it as a complaint (big surprise there) against it. Trying to level up by fighting is very slow. And thanks to the books that we can farm it's not the ideal way to level in this game.
That said I got Thoma really early on when Hu Tao's banner dropped. But I was also done with BP so based on how I play I wasn't going to spend books to get Thoma to 20 for the Acquaint Fate. So I got started the old fashioned way since I still wanted to try him out.
And since then I've gotten him to lvl5 just off of Dailies. Because of that I think I want to do another take on this "leveling sucks in Genshin" thing. If anybody's played Pokemon you know how grindy leveling up your guys can be. If you go through the whole game you'll still be around lvl50 with your team. If you did a nuzlocke and lose anybody then trying to train up a new Pokemon will take so much longer. And then you try to get them up to lvl100 and hopefully you still have some hair left by the end of it. Leveling up in any game is not fun. But it is doable.
That's what I've discovered about Genshin. We have too many whiners. As a casual who just pulled out Thoma to soak up exp during Dailies I managed to get him to lvl5 without using a single book. If I was one of those hardcore players who grinds through this game every day taking out all the enemies and bosses for drops what level might he be by now?
This experience isn't actually new for me. I was doing that for any character I got after finishing BP. You can see Xingqiu is at 21 (somebody's going to be mad at me for not building this guy) also from just hanging out for Dailies after I ascended him. So instead of thinking the leveling system in this game sucks I actually take it the opposite way now. Leveling in this game is the same as in any other RPG but we have farmable Rare Candies to use on any of these characters to max them out in no time. If you could do that in Pokemon without cheats (and shredding their EVs) I'm sure most players would go for it too instead of the hours of grinding.
