From Genshin Impact Beginner Mechanic 101

Good morning/afternoon/evening! I don't know what is your current Adventure Rank up to this point, but clearly, your karma's out of balance, you get assigned to my lecture. I'm Professor Lynman Alpha, and this is Genshin Mechanic 101. Or, as I prefer to call it... "How to Get Away with Genshin."

Lesson 2 is regarding the Arkhe System. If you missed our first lesson, you can review our lecture here:

Genshin Mechanic 101 | Lesson 2: Arkhe System

Today, we will discuss the concept of character building in the game, tailored specifically for new players who have just recently played the game. This is a great opportunity for you to learn a bit more about this concept that you might have missed. Not to mention the knowledge you will gain will aid you to become more adept in the game.

Lesson 3: Character Building

As you may all know, Genshin Impact has a lot of character rosters that you can get. You need to get your favorite character before start building them. If you are new to the game, (like less than Adventure Rank 10), you can get as many as 7 free characters that you can get as you play the game. For new players, here are the ways for you to get these free characters.

  1. Amber - Accomplished Archon Quest Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, Wind-Riding Knight Quest.
  2. Kaeya - Accomplished Archon Quest Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, Crash Course Quest
  3. Lisa - Accomplished Archon Quest Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, Sparks Amongst the Pages Quest
  4. Barbara - Reach Adventure Rank 18, and accomplished Archon Quest Prologue: Act III - Song of the Dragon and Freedom, A Long Shot Quest
  5. Xiangling - Reach Adventure Rank 20, and complete Floor 3 - Chamber 3 of the Spiral Abyss
  6. Collei - Reach Adventure Rank 20, and complete Floor 4 - Chamber 3 of the Spiral Abyss
  7. Lynette - Reach Adventure Rank 25

If you need more characters, you have an opportunity to get 85 characters (and counting) by wishing on the Character Banner, Epitome Invocation, or spend your Masterless Starglitter in Paimon's Bargain.

As a general reminder for new players, pull for characters that you think it suits your preference or the team that you want to build. Don't let other people pressure you to pull for a character that you don't want.

Character Building

The concept of Character Building is easy, yet it requires a high investment of time and energy. When building your character/s, you are aiming to increase their capabilities and attributes for them to make great contributions in battle. You can build your characters to further increase their damage (on-field or off-field), healing capabilities, and supportive qualities.

When building your characters, it will depend on how much time you are going to spend to build your characters. For new players, it will take some time for you to complete building your characters. It will be somewhat easy and less time to build your characters once you reach Adventure Rank 45 since you will have access to a lot of high-value materials that you are going to need to build your character and your weapon. Not to mention you will get access to five-star artifact sets.

I know it seems daunting, since you may heard that character building may take up to months (especially when you don't have good artifact sets), but keep in mind that it does great a significant difference when fighting enemies. You will defeat them faster and easier, and you can see high damage values when using your kit.

Oh... before I forget. When building your team, it is always recommended to invest your time in building your supports (healers, buffers, shielders, energy generators, etc), rather than your Main DPS. Good support will aid your DPS to reach your desired damage values, even at a lower Adventure Rank.

If you want to know how to build your character, you can check out my Character Guide Collection below. It contains the repository of all character guides that you will need to build your favorite character.

Character Level

My Furina's current Character Level

One of the easiest to build, especially for new players, is the Character Level. All of the characters in the game, regardless of their rarity, have a maximum character level of 90 when upgrading them. When upgrading them, it will increase the character's Base HP, DEF, ATK,a nd their unique attributes. As a rule, each character does have their Base Values. You can check the game's wiki to check their highest Base Stats at Level 90.

It is always necessary maxed out the Character's Level when building your characters to squeeze out every single attribute values you can get from them.

Ascension Phases

Ascension Phases are phases granted to the character upon reaching a certain character level. There are 6 Ascension Phases that players need to unlock to fully level up their favorite character. Upon unlocking each phase, it will gant you access to further increase the character's level, their Ascension Passive (A1 and A4 Passive will unlock at Ascenion Phases 1 and 4, respectively), and Acquiant Fates (at Ascension Phases 1, 3, and 5).

Unique Attributes

Every character have their own Unique Attributes (or Special Stats) that are relevant to their entire kit. These could range from additional HP, DEF, Elemental Mastery, to ATK%, Crit Rate, Crit DMG, and Elemental DMG Bonuses. These unique attribute will unlock as soon as you reach Ascension Phase 2.

Talent Level

My Chongyun's current Talent Level

Next one to level up is your character's Talent Level. Every character have Normal Attack, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst that you need to level up. This increases the damage and capabilities done by its respective talents, and it differes vastly each character. Some characters do have high Normal Attack damage multipliers, while others have huge damage multiplier on their Elemental Burst.

By default, all of the characters can maxed out the talent level to Level 10. It can further increase to Level 13 if you managed to get additional constellations. Keep in mind that the constellations of all character can increase two of the talents to level 13.

For example, Kazuha's C3 and C4 increases the talent level of his Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst. Neuvillette's C3 and C4 increases the talent level of his Normal Attack and Elemental Burst.

Keep in mind that the character's A1, A2 and Utility Passive's level cannot be increased.

As a general rule, you need to level up the talent of your characters after you finished leveling up your character's level.

Talent Prioritization

In every single guide (including my guides) that you will see in HoYoLAB or in any social media platforms, you will see sections that will tell you which of your character's talents need to be level up. When you see it, follow it. It is a great way to maximize all of the resources that you will farm as not all talents are required to level up. As these talent prioritization are dependent to the character's kit and gameplay in combat, you will see some guides that will provide information which talents you should highly prioritize to level up.

One of the recent guide I've made for Emilie

Some guides will present you equal signs in their guides. This denotes that you can simulatenously level them up together or you can choose between one of them to level up. It indicates that both of them are crucial core talents and both of them are going to be used during combat.

Additionaly, some guide creators lowers the brightness of one talent. In my guides, the reason they are dimmed out can be presented in two ways:

  1. You can level up the dimmed talent if you managed to unlock certain constellation. Some character's talents may not be useful at C0, but it will become useful as you unlock some of their constellations.
  2. It is a sign that it is not important to level them up because it is not part of their core kit, and the damage multiplier is low, making it unimportant to invest on it.

I know other players will build every characters like a DPS, and that's okay! There is no wrong about it and I highly encourage you to play the game as you intended. The talent prioritization section will only guide you on how to build your character, but it doesn't mandate you that this is the only way to enjoy that character.

Weapon Level

My Nahida's currenrt weapon level

Every character needs a weapon. That's is a known fact. Equipping their weapon is a good way to further increase the damage and/or supportive capabilities that your character can do. Every weapon has their own unique ability that players can freely experiment. Unlike Character Level, levelling up your weapon does have two different maximum level. For 1 and 2-Star weapons, the highest level that they can get is Level 70, while 3, 4, and 5-Star weapons can enjoy the extra 20 levels.

Every weapon has their own Base ATK and Sub-stat values. It also increases as you enhance the weapon's level. It is imperative that all of the weapons that you have must be level up to their maximum level. Base ATK and their substats adds up to the total amount of damage that you can deal, the amount of HP that you can generate, the amount of buff that you can give, and the amount of Energy that you can provide.

You can check which weapon are suitable for each characters by checking the Weapon Guide Collection below!

Signature Weapons

Whenever a five-star character banner shows up, the Epitome Invocation will showcase the five-star weapons that are tailored to them. These are called signature weapons. All of the five-star characters do have their own signature weapon as all of the passive can buff the kit of its supposed wearer. Most of the signature weapon are perfectly fits to the characters aesthetically

One of the great examples of characters having Signature Weapons are as follows:

  1. Nahida - A Thousand Floating Dreams
  2. Sigewinne - Silvershower Heartstrings
  3. Chiori - Uraku Misugiri
  4. Dehya - Beacon of the Reed Sea
  5. Xiao - Primordial Jade Winged-Spear

However, there are some signature weapons that don't work too well on their supposedly wielders in the game. It include:

  1. Zhongli - Vortex Vanquisher

There are also signature weapons that is not five-star rarity. This includes:

  1. Albedo - Cinnabar Spindle
  2. Klee - Dodoco Tales

It is up to you whether you want to pull for their respective signature weapons. Remember to always financially responsible.

Refinements

If you have mutliple similar weapons in your Inventory, it is best to refine them together. Refining increases the weapon's passive effects (highlighted with Blue), which further increases the capability of your character. You can refined your weapon five times with the maximum of Refinement Rank 5. Today, you can now simultaneously refine your weapons in Refine Tab.

Limited-weapon events and Fishing Association-Exclusive Weapons doesn't give you an access to refine them through this method. Instead, they will give you refinement materials that you need to collect (through fishing or participating on the main flagship event).

As a general rule, always refine your 1 to 4-star weapons as they generally need it to be competitive. Most four-star weapons, when refined to its maximum level, can compete to some of the five-star weapons in the roster. However, keep in mind that whenever you refine high-rarity weapons (or any weapons), you won't get it back once you hit Refine button. That's why most players don't refine their five-star weapons.

Artifact Level

One of the longest part of building your character is levelling up your Artifact. Artifact sets enhances your character even more because it adds more value to your character's attribute through its main stats and substats. These stats are essential to further increase your character's capability in combat.

There are five slots when you need to fill when you are building your character's artifact sets. It is important that you need to fill them up with their corresponding set, main stat, and substat. These slots are named below.

  1. Flower of Life - Flat HP
  2. Plume of Death - Flat ATK
  3. Sands of Eon - HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge
  4. Goblet of Eonothem - HP%, ATK% DEF% Elemental Mastery, Elemental DMG Bonus, Physical DMG Bonus
  5. Circlet of Logos - HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Elemental Mastery, Crit Rate, Crit DMG, Healing Bonus

You can't change the main stats that you will get on your Flower and Feather, but you can choose which main stats you will use on your Sands, Goblets, and Circlet.

Levelling up the artifact set is considered to be the longest phase when building your character is because of the following reasons:

  1. It is hard to get the right main stat for your Sands, Goblet, and Circlet in the game. According to internet data, the chances of getting your desired main stat have a percentage range of 4 - 26.68%, and it varies depending on which artifacts you are going to farm. In some estimates, it can take up to several months before you reach the perfect main stats for you.
  2. For Sands of Eon, it is easy to get HP%, ATK% and DEF% Main stats compared to ER and EM.
  3. For Goblet of Eonothem, it is easy to get HP%, ATK%, and DEF% Main stats, compared on getting Elemental DMG Bonus, Physical DMG Bonus, and Elemental Mastery.
  4. For Circlet of Logos, it is easy to get HP%, ATK%, and DEF% compared on getting Crit Rate, Crit DMG, Healing Bonus, and Elemental Mastery.
  5. Even though getting a Main Stat is already secured, having a decent Sub Stat Attributes also makes on how good the artifact is. Depending on the need of your character, it is often appreciated when you get ATK%, DEF%, HP%, ER, EM, Crit Rate and Crit DMG. However, there are times that you will get Flat DEF and DEF% on a character that heavily needs ATK% and Crit Rate/DMG, which adds up to the time that you need to get in order for you to receive the decent set for your character.
  6. Good artifact sets can be acquired as you reach Adventure Rank 45. It will take some time (depending on how many hours you are going to play this game) before you reach AR 45.

Although it is recommended to start farming artifact sets as you reach AR 45, it is recommended to put some beginner sets to your characters since it does increase the damage that you will unleashed against your opponents when you invest a bit to your character's set. You can use the Beginner's Guide for Artifact set below to see which artifact sets you can use for your character.

I know it is a bit old (released in 2022). I highly advice new players to comment down on the article provided as I can give some recommendations to the characters that hasn't been mentioned in the guide.

Material Preparation

Are you ready to start building your character? You should remember to check the amount of materials that you are going to need to level up your characters. All of them (including artifact enhancements) needs Mora. Since Mora is the currency in Teyvat, you need a lot of Mora, like a lot. Ascending your character's level requires you to have 2,092,530 Mora, while Ascending all of your character's talent level requires you to have 4,957,000. I know it is a lot, but you can get Mora pretty much everywhere in the game.

If you have enough mora to build your character, you need to farm and collect materials that are required to ascend your character, their talent, and their weapon.

The image above are the names of materials that you need to find in the game to allow your building process becomes smoother. In game, you can click them for you to check where you can find these materials. I won't discussing everything in full detail regarding on the materials that you are need, but in summary:

  1. Ascension Gems are the gems that you are going to need in order for your character to level up. It is usually tailored to the character's vision. However, for Traveler's case, you need Brilliant Diamond Ascension Gems, whcih you will get as an Adventure Rank Rewards. All of the Ascension Gems can be get on Hypostases and Weekly Boss Drops. Additionally, you can use Alchemy to convert your gems to craft high gemstone rarity.
  2. Normal Boss Drops are drops after you defeat the Normal Boss in the game. You can usually found them on a circular platforms around Teyvat.
  3. Local Specialty Items are items that can only found in one region in Teyvat. Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan (and Snezhnaya) all have their own local speciality items that you can only get from their respective boundaries. It also signifies on which region they are came from.
  4. Common Enemy Drops are drops that you will get after you defeat them in the open world. When you see them, defeat them.
  5. Talent Books are specifically for levelling up the Talent Level of the characters. Every region has one Domain of Mastery dedicated for farming talent books, and these books are available on a specific day. You can farm all of the books on Sunday.
  6. Weekly Boss Drops are drops that you can get after you defeat the Weekly Boss on their respective Trounce Domain (Andrius' domain is considered as Trounce Domain).
  7. Crown of Insight are character talent levelling material that you will need when you are levelling your character's talent to Level 9 and 10. You can usually get it through Events, and Offering Systems.
  8. Weapon Materials are materials that your weapon needs to level them up. They are usually available through Domain of Forgery. Similar to Talent Books, each materials that you need are going to be available on a scheduled basis. You can farm all three of the materials on Sunday.
  9. Elite Enemy Drops are drops of enemy after you defeat Elite Enemies on open world. You will know if you are going to fight them if they are big, harder to defeat, and drop some beginner artifact sets.

Building Prioritization

As mentioned, there is no right or wrong on how you are going to build your characters. For players who are still struggling to know the prioritization to build their characters, you can follow the heirarchy above.

You can also pre-farm for your ascension materials that your character need (including the weapon ascension materials, especially if you are planning to pull for their weapon).
