The Vibro Crystal event is over now and I'm finally getting around to talking about the lore dump we got on day 1.
So I was probably right. Fontaine's going to be similar to Inazuma where the Archon's going to have direct control over her region. Since she's afraid of Celestia she'll use her courtroom to keep her people in check.
But how does she manipulate her courtroom to do that? Now we know:
So on the surface this just looks like a risk-reward scenario. You spend Fontaine's money on a business or research venture. But if it doesn't work out you're liable for the expenditures as if you stole the funds.
But what this implies is that the Hydro Archon wants to dissuade her people from trying to look into these things because what if some future endeavor just happens to dig into something Celestia doesn't want people looking into? It could even be that the advancements of Fontaine started under the original Hydro Archon but the God of Justice they currently have wants to keep Fontaine the way it is in case it ends up getting too advanced and ending up like Khaenri'ah.
That said there also seems to be a gamble involved. If the research is successful then they can't be convicted of any crime so the Hydro Archon will have to acquiesce. This is the kind of setting that probably got the lochfolk to turn on her and leave Fontaine.
This is also reflective of the real world judicial corruption of pre-French Revolution France. Judges worked towards their own interests. The punishments for ordinary citizens was severe. And there were many calls for reform which of course led to revolution.
I'm really looking forward to playing Danganronpa against Pulcinella in court and forcing the Hydro Archon to change her system in that way. It'll be cool to see a "boss fight" that doesn't involve just beating the opponent senseless haha.
