Called it

A while ago I talked about how MiHoYo may start to refocus Genshin's development on our markets instead of their market back home. It looks like they may be taking their first babysteps towards that.

If you heard it already it's likely you heard it as a "controversy" but what's really happened is that MiHoYo set up another publishing company called Cognosphere and our global version of Genshin will now be distributed by it instead of directly by MiHoYo. Now why would MiHoYo do this? Well the Gaming Hunt Decree of course.

See unlike many other parts of the world China takes gaming addiction in young people very seriously. A little too "overprotective mama bear" seriously. So even while Genshin's built with anti-addiction mechanisms already in place China might still clamp down on them making the future of Genshin much more limited than it should be. And that's where Cognosphere comes in. Cognosphere was founded by MiHoYo in Singapore meaning for all legal purposes it doesn't have to follow any of China's laws on gaming. Of course that wouldn't apply to the Chinese version of the game because the laws would apply to the game itself but Cognosphere should allow MiHoYo to continue developing the version we play without those problems.

As I pointed out yesterday Genshin is not a majority Chinese player game. While the largest single chunk of the playerbase is still in China it only comprises about 30%. So 70% of players are from outside its borders. On top of that Japan has been their largest source of revenue since the start of this year and America is not far behind. It only makes sense for MiHoYo to safeguard its game development and cater to our global playerbase.

Now if only they would get a handle on pr. [emoji]
