✦ Quick Infographic ✦

✦ Introduction ✦

Hu Tao is a powerful 5-star Pyro Polearm user and an exceptional damage dealer, especially in Vaporize teams where her performance reaches its peak. When there is sufficient Hydro on the enemy, Hu Tao can Vaporize every charged attack she performs. However, she requires more skill and experience to play than other on-field damage dealers, as her full potential can only be unleashed through animation cancels and specific combos. Hu Tao has also a place in speedrun teams as a burst-only DPS and in mono Pyro or Vape/Melt teams. This guide will primarily focus on Hu Tao's Vaporize aspect, but will also cover other options available to the player.

Personal note: I have been playing Hu Tao since her first release and she is the character on my account with the most love (3 Crowns, C1, Homa and multiple artifact sets). I hesitated making this guide for the longest time as I thought I couldn’t do her justice or that it would take me too long to do. But, I finally decided to put my 2 years experience playing her into this, enjoy!

✦ Talents Overview ✦

✦ Normal Attack: Secret Spear of Wangsheng ✦

Hu Tao's Normal, Charged and Plunge Attack talent. Most details about this Talent will be in the Skill section or Combo section.

✦ Elemental Skill: Guide to Afterlife ✦

Hu Tao consumes 30% of her Max HP to knock the surrounding enemies back and enter the Paramita Papilio state. This is the core of Hu Tao’s gameplay, providing Pyro infusion and a conversion from HP to Atk.

Paramita Papilio

• Increases Hu Tao's ATK based on her Max HP

• ATK Bonus gained this way cannot exceed 400% of Hu Tao's Base ATK (very rare scenarios)

• Converts attacks to Pyro DMG, which cannot be overridden by any other elemental infusion

• Charged Attacks apply the Blood Blossom effect to the enemies hit and have a different animation

• Increases Hu Tao's resistance to interruption

• When a converted attack hits at least one enemy it generates 2.5 (2 or 3) Energy Particles with a Cooldown of 5s

• The skill cast applies Pyro to enemies or objects around her without dealing any damage

• Duration 9s

• Cooldown 16s

Paramita Papilio ends when its duration is over, or Hu Tao has left the battlefield or fallen.

Blood Blossom (Damage over Time)

• Enemies affected by Blood Blossom will take Pyro DMG every 4s

• This DMG is considered Elemental Skill DMG

• Each enemy can be affected by only one Blood Blossom effect at a time

• Duration 8s

Elemental Skill’s real duration and Hitlag

Hu Tao’s Elemental Skill, in practical uses, does not have a duration of 9 seconds because of an in-game mechanic called Hitlag Extension. As you can see in the gif above my Elemental Skill is supposed to end at 7s but it’s still active up to around 5s because of hitlag.

Hitlag refers to a phenomenon that occurs when most melee attacks hit a target, which slows down the attacker and various in-game counters for a short amount of time. It’s used to give the impression of weight and impact to attacks. For Hu Tao this translates to longer Skill duration.

✦ Elemental Burst: Spirit Soother ✦

Deals Pyro DMG in a large AoE around her.

On hit, regenerates a percentage of Hu Tao's Max HP. This effect can be triggered up to 5 times, per enemy hit.

If Hu Tao's HP is below or equal to 50%, both the DMG and HP Regeneration are increased.

• Cooldown 15s

• Energy Cost 60

This Burst is a big red panic button in case you get too low HP or simply to add AoE damage by the end of Hu Tao’s rotation. Try to not use it too early as it will heal you up, making you possibly lose on buffs from being low HP.

PP Slide

Hu Tao’s Elemental Skill cannot expire while in a Charged Attack animation. It’s possible to “queue” a Burst during your very last Charged Attack and it will take full advantage of the Skill buff even if it was supposed to end at any point during said Charged Attack, as shown in the clip. The same applies for your last Charged Attack, being able to extend your Skill duration a little bit, on top of the aforementioned hitlag mechanic.

The practical use of this tech is that as long as you are performing a Pyro infused Charged Attack you can queue a Burst and it will be guaranteed to utilize the Skill’s Atk buff. For this to work, said last Charged Attack cannot be animation canceled.

✦ Ascension 1: Turn Control ✦

When Hu Tao’s Elemental Skill’s buff ends, all allies in the party (excluding herself) will have their Crit Rate increased by 12% for 8s. Good for her team’s second rotation and to proctrigger Favonius weapons.

✦ Ascension 4: Adapt With Ease ✦

When Hu Tao's HP is equal to or less than 50%, her Pyro DMG Bonus is increased by 33%. A big increase in damage if you can lower her HP quick enough while also staying alive, which is generally ok as she has a very high base HP pool.

✦ Unique Sprint ✦

Hu Tao has a special sprint that enables her to momentarily move through smaller foes, but only during the initial sprint and not during the ongoing run. In appearance, Hu Tao vanishes and is replaced by butterflies, which are usually white but turn red when she uses her Elemental Skill.

✦ ICD ✦

Internal Cooldown (ICD) dictates how often an ability can apply its element for elemental reactions or auras.

Hu Tao’s Charged Attack has no ICD. For example, given enough Hydro on the enemy, each Charged Attack will trigger a Vaporize reaction.

That is the reason why her most common playstyle is to perform as many Charged Attacks as possible combined with Hydro enablers like Xingqiu and Yelan.

✦ Combos and Animation Canceling ✦

N# = Number of Normal Attacks

C = Charged Attack

D = Dash

J = Jump

It’s possible to cancel Hu Tao’s Charged Attacks very early, to the point they are barely visible. This can be done by dashing or jumping.

Jump cancels are slower but consume no stamina, they are great at C0.

Dash cancels, on the other hand, can be great for repositioning and get extra invulnerability frames, but consume a lot of extra stamina and are more suited for C1. Unfortunately, after two consecutive dashes, there is a brief dash cooldown, making it impossible to perform the cancels in a very fast sequence.

N 1C and N2C

The two main combos are N 1 C and N2C.

N 1C applies less Pyro overall and is considered easier to cancel, while N2C avoids dash cooldown and can lead to higher damage but also result in more Pyro being applied.

The general recommendation is to perform either, depending on personal preference or the amount of Pyro applied by other units (such as Thoma or Xiangling). The way you will want to cancel either combo is generally by jumping at C0 and dashing at C1. With that said you can absolutely mix and match the combo, but remember that without C1 canceling your Charged Attacks with a dash will be very expensive, so it should only be used for short damage windows.

N 1CJ

N2CD

C1 users can also enjoy N 1 C D without worrying about dash cooldown by performing a jump cancel every 2 dash cancels.

✦ Talent Priority ✦

Unless you are playing Hu Tao just to nuke with your Burst, you will always want to max out her Normal Attack Talent first, followed by Elemental Skill and then Burst.

✦ Artifacts and Stats ✦

Artifact sets

• 4 Shimenawa's Reminiscence

Despite its drawbacks, this can be considered the best set for many. It provides a two-piece bonus that is not ideal for her (+18% Atk) and removes 15 Energy on use but it provides a great amount of DMG% on your Normal and Charged Attacks. Losing 15 energy during play is acceptable for Hu Tao, as it is possible to generate enough energy to use her Elemental Skill by the end of a rotation. However, this depends on the situation she is in. The option to use the Burst as a panic button to survive or heal might not always be present.

It’s very important to note that this set is way easier to justify farming for compared to Crimson Witch.

• 4 Crimson Witch of Flames

A great option for Hu Tao. It unfortunately cannot be fully used, as she cannot get more than 1 stack of the 4 piece effect, resulting in only 7.5% Pyro DMG. It’s still incredibly strong thanks to the 15% base Pyro DMG and increased DMG for any Pyro reactions. It can surpass Shimenawa when using the Burst on every rotation.

Farming this set is not recommended generally. Shimenawa is just a better option for your resin, especially for anyone below AR 55 and will provide the same amount of overall damage if not more. If you really want to play with Crimson Witch (mostly for the instant Burst option) you can farm Shimenawa or something else while using the Strongbox to slowly gain Crimson Witch pieces.

• 4 Gilded Dreams

This new Sumeru set can be a good option if you are not willing to farm the sets above and if you are giving her a team without any other Pyro units, in order to get the maximum EM stacks.

• 2 piece flex CW / +80 EM / Tenacity

If you are struggling building a full set you can pick the best out of 2 piece options. Aim at your highest substats and correct main stats in any case. Low AR players can enjoy a Berserk set, instead.

Main/Sub Stats

Ascension stat is Crit DMG (+ 38.4%)

• Sands | HP / EM

• Goblet | Pyro DMG

• Circlet | Crit Rate or Crit DMG

Your substats will focus on Crit > EM > HP% > ATK% > Flat HP. Having at least some EM can be better than Crit since most of her damage can be amplified by Vaporize reactions. ER instead is generally not a great stat for Hu Tao, most of her damage comes from her Normal and Charged Attacks.

HP and EM Sands

The only real debate that one might find in choosing Hu Tao’s main stats is in the Sands slot.

Generally, HP Sands will be chosen in situations where Hu Tao is receiving big or multiple EM buffs: Sucrose, Instructor’s Set, Kazuha C2, Freedom Sworn, Nahida, etc.

EM Sands will come on top in situations where no or very few EM buffs are applied even without any external HP buff. Keep in mind however that HP Sands are less rare so they might have better substats, but that really depends on each person’s account.

ATK or HP scaling?

Contrary to some popular beliefs, it is incorrect to say that Hu Tao scales solely off HP. She technically scales entirely off ATK but her Elemental Skill provides a significant conversion from HP to ATK, that combined to her very low base attack, makes HP% better than ATK%.

This also means that flat ATK buffs (Bennett/Sara) are not less valuable to her, but buffs like TTDS or Noblesse Oblige, instead, are.

✦ Weapons Ranking ✦

Hu tao’s weapon choice does not need to be very complicated as she has limited options that really suit her. Generally going for Crit/EM weapons should be prioritized.

• Staff of Homa • ATK 608 • Crit DMG 66.2%

Signature weapon and best option, Hu Tao uses the passive very well. The only downside we can niche pick is that it makes it almost mandatory to have a Crit Rate Circlet as, paired with her Ascension stat, Hu Tao will have base (no artifacts) 158% Crit DMG and just 5% Crit Rate.

• Staff of the Scarlet Sands • ATK 542 • Crit Rate 44.1%

It’s not possible for Hu Tao to fully stack this weapon but both the high Crit Rate and EM to ATK conversion work very well for her and make this her 2nd best option.

• Deathmatch • ATK 454 • Crit Rate 36.8%

A great amount of Crit Rate with some use out of its passive. A good choice gated by battle pass.

• Dragon’s Bane • ATK 454 • EM 221

A great option that refines very well. Since it provides a good amount of EM you might prefer an HP Sands, especially if other EM buffs are present.

• Lithic Spear • ATK 565 • ATK 27.6%

This weapon at high refinements holds an amazing value for certain teams and has potential to be as strong as the Scarlet Sands. Most notably, as we will see later, Funerational teams (Xingqiu, Yelan, Zhongli) make full use of this weapon. If you happen to have this at high refinements because of previous banners or an unlucky Staff of Homa pulling session, give it a try.

• Primordial Jade-Winged Spear • ATK 674 • Crit Rate 22.1%

A good option that will be a close contender to the above 4 star options. The high base ATK and slowish stack mechanic don’t help much.

• Missive Windspear • ATK 510 • ATK 41.3%

A F2P but limited weapon. Ok for the extra EM, not for the ATK. Still better than most other options.

• Blackcliff • ATK 510 • Crit DMG 55.1%

Honestly just a bait, it might be better then the next option usually but it’s not worth the Starglitter. The stacks are rare to get and don’t help a lot.

• White Tassel • ATK 401 • Crit Rate 23.4%

The only real and decent F2P option, obtainable in Liyue chests. N2C is the preferred combo here.

Other weapons are simply not worth considering.

✦ Teams ✦

This section will include a brief explanation for each team, options for replacements and rotations for most teams Hu Tao is considered in. Keep in mind that rotations are not set in stone and will depend on the situation and gears.

Rotations will follow these abbreviations:

N# = Number of Normal Attacks

C = Charged Attack

E = Elemental Skill

Q = Elemental Burst

Usually Hu Tao teams tend to perform well in single target scenarios, a department that is facing great competition because of the recent introduction of Dendro and more specifically Hyperbloom, a reaction that can deal very high damage at low investment. Hu Tao will generally perform better but only given enough investment and correct rotations.

Before diving into the teams, a few words regarding Hu Tao’s best support: Xingqiu

Xingqiu (and Yelan)

Xingqiu is able to support Hu Tao, enable Vaporize reactions by himself and add to the overall team damage. He not only offers Hydro application via Burst but also with his melee rainswords, that will also reduce the damage Hu Tao will take and makes her more durable in dire situations. The very low amount of healing also works well with her.

He gets better with Constellations but is playable at C0. His weapon options are fairly easy to obtain, either Favonius or Sacrificial will work fantastic on him but Amenoma can be a great totally F2P option. At C6 he can also look at damage options since his Burst will effectively cost less energy.

Yelan is a very similar unit to Xingqiu, she gives up all his utility and extra Hydro application for more damage. C0 Yelan can function alongside Hu Tao as a solo Hydro user, but her Hydro application is not always sufficient in maintaining the aura necessary for Vaporize reactions. Assisting it with an Hydro infused Anemo talent, Kazuha or Sucrose Burst for example, will help. The best course of action, if applicable, would be to have both Xingqiu and Yelan in your team. This will enable one of Hu Tao’s best teams: Double Hydro.

Double Hydro

Since the introduction of Yelan this team quickly became one of her best teams, providing:

• Access to Hydro resonance (+25% HP), used by both Hu Tao and Yelan

• Enough Hydro at any given time, that enables a 2nd Pyro unit like Thoma or Xiangling to slot in without problems

• Great synergy between 2 the Hydro units, alleviating both’s high energy requirements

• Flexible and easier gameplay compared to other teams

Some of the best units for the last slots are:

• Anemo users to VV shred Hydro - Kazuha / Sucrose

• Geo defensive options - Zhongli / Albedo / Yun Jin

• Another Pyro unit to add utility or damage - Thoma / Xiangling / Bennett

• Anyone that does not interrupt her reactions and adds to the team can be slotted in. Fischl, Layla, Mona and some Cryo units, for example.

Funerational

Probably the harder version to play of double Hydro. Xiangling, especially at C6 can provide surprising damage boosts to Hu Tao while also being able to Vaporize her damage. The Hydro application is barely enough and it might be overcome by Pyro at some point, especially against moving or multiple enemies.

Here a sample rotation:

Yelan E > Xingqiu Q N1 E N1 > Xiangling Q N1 E N1 > Yelan Q N3 E > Hu Tao E N1 C (N2C applies more Pyro but it’s still ok to use here)

P.s. I love the Genshin Community for coming out with such names

Zhongli Double Hydro

Zhongli offers Hu Tao with a massive shield and AoE RES shred. Usually Zhongli’s Crystalize reaction can ruin some Vaporize but not when paired with 2 Hydro units. In this team, he is also able to benefit from the Hydro Resonance. Avoiding his Burst and going for a supportive route is usually recommended.

Sample rotation:

Zhongli Hold E > Xingqiu Q N1 E > Yelan Q N1 E > Hu Tao E N 1C or E N2C

Triple Hydro

This team probably doesn’t deserve a full section but we can use it to talk about Mona.

Mona is a very underappreciated support for Hu Tao, she can work fine with the 2 other Hydro units but can also be paired with Yelan or Xingqiu and enable the Hydro resonance. At C0 her impact has not peaked, bringing extra DMG (up to 60% at TL10) and TTDS. She can however unlock extra buffs with Constellations, 15% Vaporize damage at C1 and 15% Crit Rate at C4. She is an ok option for people missing either Xingqiu or Yelan that want to experiment with the double Hydro archetype.

Sample rotation:

Xingqiu Q N1 E > Yelan Q N1 E > Mona Q E > Hu Tao E N 1C or E N2C

Anemo Double Hydro

Using an Anemo unit might not sound optimal as it’s not feasible to Swirl Pyro and give her any utility Anemo can provide, but in reality Xingqiu and Yelan will account for a large portion of the team’s damage and buffing it, can have a lot of value. Sucrose can fit in, giving Hu Tao EM and TTDS.

Sample rotation:

Xingqiu Q N1 E > Yelan Q N1 E > Kazuha/Sucrose N1 E Q N1 > Hu Tao E N 1C or N2C

VV Vape

These teams can be a real pain because of how tricky setting up a Pyro Swirl or, even worse, a double Swirl can be. The reward, however, is being able to reach Hu Tao’s maximum personal damage.

The Hydro unit is self explanatory, either Xingqiu or Yelan.

The Anemo unit is rather simple as well, either Sucrose for the EM share and TTDS or Kazuha for the raw Elemental DMG and possibly EM share thanks to C2 or Freedom Sworn. Other Anemo units are usable but don’t offer enough buffs to function well in this team archetype.

The Pyro option of choice, instead, has to be someone that does not apply off-field Pyro and brings utility. We can adapt the following units to that role:

• Amber is able to hold Elegy for the End and apply a lot of Pyro in a short window of time

• Bennett, contrary to popular belief, is still a great unit to Hu Tao even if she brings her above 50% HP, the huge flat ATK buff and C6 DMG bonus are great for her

• Klee, is mostly relevant for her C2’s Def shred and TTDS

• Xinyan and Thoma, provide shields but not much else

• Yanfei is worth considering at C4 where she unlocks a great shield ability, also able to carry TTDS

All of them can build either an Instructor’s Set (+120 EM) or Noblesse Set (+20% ATK).

Amber, Yanfei and Thoma are the more realistic and F2P friendly units among them. Let’s see an example:

Xingqiu Q N1 E N1 > Amber Q E > Sucrose N1 E > Hu Tao

Or with Kazuha: Xingqiu E Q N1 > Amber Q E > Kazuha N1 E Q N1 > Hu Tao > Kazuha E

Geo Bros

Before double Hydro this was the go to comfortable and strong Hu Tao team. Today it can adapt with units like Yelan and Yun Jin.

But even when featuring Albedo, unfortunately, this team trades damage for survivability. It’s also fairly expensive.

Talking about Yun Jin, even if the core gameplay of Hu Tao relies around charged attacks, while performing the N2C combo, Yun Jin can work well and might find use in accounts that lack other options. She can be slotted in for Double Hydro teams as well.

Sample rotation:

Albedo E > Xingqiu Q NA E > Zhongli Hold E > Albedo N1 Q > Hu Tao

With Yun Jin:

Xingqiu Q N1 E > Yun Jin Tap E Q N1 > Zhongli Hold E > Hu Tao

Vape + Melt

This is one of the cheapest Hu Tao teams as, aside from Xingqiu (or Yelan) a lot of Cryo units work here. Even with plenty of Cryo being applied, Hu Tao will get just a few Melts in a full rotation, making the team overall not as strong as others. It remains a fun and easy to access team, it holds value in the ability to set up big and fast melted Bursts. You are not limited by Kaeya and Rosaria, actually, almost any Cryo unit will be fine.

Sample rotation: Xingqiu E Q N1 > Rosaria E Q N1 > Kaeya E Q N1 > Hu Tao

Mono Pyro

Easy to play and covers AoE scenarios very well. It’s not as good as other teams but it can be a great option in some scenarios or against particular enemies, for example, against Hydro or Cryo infused enemies (slimes or Hypostasis). It’s hard to replace anyone in this team as, in reality, Hu Tao is the one who is replaceable.

Speedrun

A team loved by speedrunners with high investment builds. This dual carry setup has Ayaka enabling big Hu Tao bursts while also providing solid damage, while Kazuha can possibly buff both. It’s not necessary to have any particular Constellation or Weapon to play but the aim of this team is to have fast setups and huge damage spikes. No set in stone rotation is here, it depends on the enemies and the number of waves faced.

Dendro

Hu Tao has access to 2 Dendro reactions: Burgeon and Burning. In theory, Burgeon has potential to be effective, but in practice, a character like Hu Tao who prefers to remain at low HP and avoid heals is not compatible with abilities that inflict significant self-damage. Maybe once we get a Dendro shielder it might be worth a shot. Burning, on the other hand, is just not that great but is somewhat playable.

✦ Constellations ✦

C1 • During her Elemental Skill, Hu Tao's Charge Attacks do not consume Stamina.

Hu Tao’s best quality of life update. Being able to spam Charged Attacks without worrying about stamina means being able to cancel them with a dash instead of a jump, which turns into a great damage increase, even more than 20%. It might just be the best C1 in the game.

C2 • Increases the Blood Blossom DMG by an amount equal to 10% of Hu Tao's Max HP at the time the effect is applied. Additionally, her Burst will also apply the Blood Blossom effect.

A good increase in damage for the DoT but overall not amazing.

C3 • Elemental Skill +3 Talent Levels

C4 • Upon defeating an enemy affected by a Blood Blossom, all nearby allies in the party (excluding Hu Tao) will have their CRIT Rate increased by 12% for 15s.

Even more Crit Rate for your party paired with her A1 (total +24% Crit Rate). It will most likely change the way you allocate your Crit on your other 3 units.

 C5 • Elemental Burst +3 Talent Levels

C6 • Procs when Hu Tao's HP drops below 25%, or when she suffers a lethal strike:

Hu Tao will not fall as a result of the DMG sustained. Additionally, for the next 10s, all of her Elemental and Physical RES is increased by 200%, her CRIT Rate is increased by 100%, and her resistance to interruption is greatly increased. This effect procs automatically when Hu Tao has 1 HP left. Can only occur once every 60s.

This is honestly such a fun Constellation and with a lot of potential. It allows great speedrunning material as you can run as little as no Crit Rate for a Burst setup. It also buffs average gameplay as it will get triggered by simply spamming her Elemental Skill, giving you free Crit Rate every 60 seconds, potentially. Building a normal, but lower, amount of Crit Rate is usually recommended while using this Constellation.

One important thing I want to point out for everyone willing or able to pull constellations for Hu Tao is that, making an exception for her C1, pulling for her supports Constellations and Weapons will likely be better than pulling for her own Constellations. Kazuha’s C2 + Freedom and Yelan’s C2/C4 are greatly appreciated.

✦ C1 vs Staff of Homa ✦

A pretty common debate among people that intend to give Hu Tao that extra love. Technically C1 will not only feel better to play but also potentially offer more damage, personally and via extra procs of Yelan/Xingqiu Bursts. The difference however is not that big and having an extra polearm that could be used on other characters has value in itself. With that said, the weapon banner can be a trap and you should always wish only if you are ok with the worst outcome.
